Lake Wales Youth Chorale Holds Auditions in late August for its third year.
The Lake Wales Youth Chorale is currently holding auditions for the 2007-2008 performing season. Auditions are open for both female and male children who are 8 – 15 years old, have unchanged voices and enjoy singing. You may schedule an audition by calling the Arts Center (676-8426) and leaving a message for director, Cathy Montero.
The Lake Wales Youth Chorale is a traditional children’s choir made up of 60+ singers from 16 different schools and home schooled children. They perform yearly with the Lake Wales Adult Chorale and participate in choir festivals where they receive very high marks. They also have concerts several times each year to a packed auditorium. They will travel to New York in April of 2008 to sing at Carnegie Hall.
Children do not need to read music to be selected for the group. Selection is based on the ability to match a given pitch in an appropriate range. They do not need to prepare a song to sing for the audition. The Youth Chorale focuses on proper vocal techniques, music theory, sight singing, and a wide range of repertoire throughout the year. The tuition for the year is $80 for Art Center members and $100 for non-members. There are need based scholarships available as well as family discounts. Sponsorships from local businesses or individuals are greatly appreciated and needed.
Youth Chorale Music Director Cathy Montero is a music educator with more than 20 years of experience. A graduate of University of Miami, she is currently working at Hillcrest Elementary School, right next door to the Arts Center. The Youth Chorale practices at the Arts Center each Monday 3:30 – 4:30 pm or Tuesday 4:00 – 5:00 pm after school. Call the Lake Wales Arts Council at 863-676-8426 for more information.

Contemporary American Wood Artistry Opens July 19 and Closes August 31
Searching for a theme for her first exhibition at the Lake Wales Arts Council, new director Joy Thompson attended Mayfaire-by-the-Lake in Lakeland and had the good fortune to meet five wood artists who produce varied and exciting art in many different wood forms. Working from this foundation of artists, she combed the region to identify other artists to round out the exhibit and finally settled on more than 40 works of art created by five Florida artists and other artists from Georgia, Tennessee and Illinois. Four works of art were borrowed from the Polk Museum of Art’s permanent collection
and one work of art will be borrowed from a private collector in Lake Wales. Thompson states “Wood is so organic I was drawn to the diverse forms these artists managed to wrestle from one media- wood. I was amazed at the spontaneity of this art form.”
The Florida artists included in the Contemporary American Wood Artistry exhibition include George Byers and Tom Knisley from Tampa, Lloyd Cheney from Palm Bay, Charles L. Parkhill from Sanford , Bill Snyder from Lake Placid and Margaret Steward from St. Petersburg. Georgia wood carver Terry Daniel is from Ellijay, Jon Reiver is from Crossville, Tennessee and Bill McQuitty in from Silvis, Illinois.
These artists create wood carving, wood turning, monumental works of sculpture, quiet and even introspective works, and works utilizing found materials. The exhibition opens July 19, 2007 at 5:00 pm and the public is invited. A series of art talks and lecture demonstrations have been scheduled for Saturdays in July and also in August.
